It takes time to understand the scope of certain revolutions. On April 30, 1986, Italy discovered Internetbut hardly anyone noticed. Today, thirty years later, this date is celebrated with the first Internet day Italian convened by the Government led by Matteo Renzi. A thirtieth anniversary to be celebrated with the Italian Internet Day, with a ceremony that began this morning in the auditorium of the Pisa research area of the Cnr (via G. Moruzzi, 1) and which will be concluded by a speech, via the web, by Prime Minister Matteo Renzi. The Prime Minister himself is the target of the protest that is taking place in these minutes in Pisa, outside the headquarters of the Cnr, with clashes between demonstrators and the police.
Returning to April 30th 86, the tragedy of the explosion of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant had occurred four days earlier and monopolized the attention of the press. No newspaper spoke of what was happening at the headquarters of the Cnuce-Cnr, in via Santa Maria a Pisa, when our country was connected to Arpanet, the US network forerunner of the Internet. From Cnuce-Cnr a "Ping" command-message was sent to which they answered from Roaring Creak in Pennsylvania, with a simple "ok".
Today, thirty years later, we know that that day somehow changed the history of our country, the fourth European nation to connect to the Arpanet, after England, Norway and Germany. A year later, Italy registered the first official domain with the suffix .it: “cnuce.cnr.it”.
Beyond the many numbers that can underline the penetration of the Internet in our country, nowadays, it is still difficult, almost impossible, to quantify the impact on the reality in which we live and this happened at the headquarters of the Cnuce-Cnr thirty' Years ago.
VODAFONE-TIM CHALLENGE
To celebrate the Internet day, the big names in telecommunications challenge each other.
Vodafone launches a day dedicated to digital literacy. The telecommunications group has decided to celebrate the historic occasion in two ways: with a specific national communication campaign and by organizing a day dedicated to digital literacy within the Vodafone Stores in Friuli Venezia Giulia, with training courses and meetings.
The training courses will focus on smartphones and tablets with the aim of bringing those who are still unfamiliar with these tools into the digital world, while the meetings, held by digital technology experts, will focus on the use of the Internet, applications and latest generation devices, illustrating the possible risks associated with web browsing.
Vodafone Italia started its activities in our country 20 years ago, and with the Vodafone 4G network – the “best 4G mobile network in
Italy” according to the German Institute of Quality and Finance and the research company P3 Communications – reached 95% of the population for a total of 6.300 municipalities covered. Vodafone Italia's fiber optic services with speeds of up to 100 Mbps are available in over 270 cities for 8,5 million households and businesses. In Milan, Bologna and Turin Vodafone Italia has recently launched the offer in fiber plus
speed of Italy, with the possibility of surfing in FTTH up to 500 Mbps.
