Growing businesses in Italy: +15.400 in the third quarter of 2023

The activation/termination balance is back active. More openings and fewer closures compared to 2022 but the
vitality of the entrepreneurial system remains very limited. Here are the data from the latest quarterly analysis conducted by Unioncamere and InfoCamere

Growing businesses in Italy: +15.400 in the third quarter of 2023

During the summer quarter, theItalian entrepreneurship showed one slight recovery. In the period between July and September, the Chambers of Commerce business register has registered a positive balance of 15.407 economic activities representing an increase of 0,26% compared to the end of June. The positive balance is the result of 59.236 new registrations and 43.299 cessations of activity.

The data comes from the base of Movcompanies, the quarterly analysis conducted by Unioncamere e InfoRooms.

Limited entrepreneurial vitality

The quarterly result indicates a entrepreneurial vitality relatively limited. The balance of economic activities is lower than the average of the last ten years, and both new openings and closures of businesses are among the less brilliant performances of this period.

Positive sign in all regions

  regions and macro-areas of Italy have recorded a positive balance in terms of economic activities in the quarter. The Lazio stands out with a quarterly growth of 0,44%, driven by Rome with 0,5%. In absolute terms, the greatest expansion of the entrepreneurial fabric was observed in Lombardia, with an increase of 3.334 companies, equivalent to a growth rate of 0,35%. Milan recorded a performance of 0,49%, in line with that of the capital.

Data by sector, construction is good, agriculture is down

In the quarter, almost a quarter of the positive balance concerns the construction sector, with an increase of 4.213 companies (0,5% growth). The professional activities, scientific and technical show the highest growth rate, with an increase of 1,1% and 2.597 new activities in the quarter. The accommodation and restaurant sector also performed well, with an increase of 2.825 units (growth of 0,62%). On the contrary, i trade sectors and manufacturing activities recorded growth of less than 0,1%, while the only sector with a decline was that ofagriculture, forestry and fishing, with a decrease of 0,1%.

The types of businesses

A business out of three (19.929) was born as company capital, which confirm themselves as the most dynamic organizational form with a growth rate of 0,68%. This corresponds to a positive balance of 12.658 units, representing 82% of the total quarterly balance. As regards theindividual enterprise, the main organizational form chosen by new entrepreneurs, there have been 35.531 new registrations, contributed only 3.935 units to the quarterly balance, equivalent to a growth rate of 0,13%, due to the 31.596 closures recorded in the same period.
