Fiat, Passera: badly reducing investments and postponing models

The Minister of Economic Development Corrado Passera takes a position on the Fiat affair: faced with the prospect that the Lingotto to reduce investments in Italy until the recovery is seen "we certainly did not agree". Indeed, "in all sectors it is from investment, from the creation of new products that there is then the rebirth and strengthening of companies", continued Passera speaking at a conference at the Bocconi University.

THEmeeting on Saturday between the Government and the managing director Sergio Marchionne it was certainly “useful, much more clarity has been made. It was essentially positive, if we see it in the sense that no requests for aid have been made, no announcements of closures or redundancies have been made. There was a very professional, detailed presentation of the challenges and achievements of the new global company that is today Fiat. It is a pleasure to see certain results in many parts of the world, just a few years ago the situation was quite different and we are all happy if an Italian company has good results abroad”.

“We then illustrated some of our concerns – continued Passera – which are serious because there is no doubt that the trend in market shares in Europe and Italy suggests that investment decisions are not sufficiently adequate and the answer was that in these three years 5 billion have been invested in Italy and that our investment plan must be reduced until the light of recovery is seen".

Also Fiat's postponement of the launch of some new models is "a very serious cause for concern". In any case, the Government is working to find a "useful solution for the entire Italian system in the coming weeks, starting with the Fiat case" on incentive mechanisms, fiscal or regulatory, for exports.
