The post-Renzi era opens. "Dear president, having taken note of the electoral results, I resign as secretary of the Democratic Party". These are the words contained in the letter of resignation of the now former secretary – absent -, read by the president Matteo Orfini.
Renzi has asked the president of the party to convene the national assembly, scheduled for April, and to carry out the formalities required by the statute. That will be the area in which Renzi will explain the reasons for his resignation.
The deputy secretary, Maurizio Martina, is leading the games of the national direction. Present Lorenzo Guerini, Ettore Rosato, Luca Lotti and the premier Paolo Gentiloni.
“I will lead the party with the utmost collegiality – said Martina as she opened the proceedings – and with the full involvement of everyone, majority and minorities, immediately identifying a place for shared coordination together. I ask for unity”.
NO TO CONGRESS NOW
Maurizio Martina announces collegial management of the transition phase and postpones the congress: "The National Assembly in April instead of starting the congress and the primaries should create a project Commission for a constituent and reorganization phase".
“Let's start again with humility and unity -. continued the regent secretary – Only we can be the popular alternative to the populists. At stake are not personal destinies, but the perspective and future of the Italian and European left. Let's put our community in the front row and leave the currents in the back row. Let's all try to do a few less interviews and a few more assemblies. Let's open our sections immediately, listen to members and voters, call them together, reflect with them. Let's start from the bottom and from our people. We have six thousand circles, we hold six thousand open assemblies between next Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I will start from the PD club in Fuorigrotta in Naples".
PD TO THE OPPOSITION
"It belongs to whoever won the responsibility of the government" affirmed Martina, confirming the line dictated by Matteo Rerzi. “To the forces that have won, let's say only one thing: now you no longer have an alibi. Now the time for propaganda is over. I say this in particular to Lega and Cinque Stelle: the citizens voted for you to govern, now do it. Dear Di Maio and Salvini, take your responsibilities".
The Democratic Party, for its part, "will continue to serve the citizens of the opposition, from the role of parliamentary minority". “Our defeat was clear – said Martina – We intend to deeply respect the vote of all Italians and we will be consistent with the results of March 4th. Now it's up to whoever has received the greatest consensus the honor and the burden of governing the country. We will continue to serve the citizens, from the opposition, from the role of a parliamentary minority”.
The Minister of Transport, Graziano Delrio, shares the same opinion: "We have received a clean, clear postcard from the voters - said Graziano Delrio – We will stay where the voters put us: in the opposition”. A "serious, responsible, constructive" opposition. "When the country realizes that the promises will be unfeasible, the voters will demand an account," he says.
Even the Minister of Justice Andrea Orlando, reiterates the importance of collegiality, but launches a few jabs: “Martina must have our support but don't look at us wrong if we ask for any guarantees. The last direction has created a vulnerability in relations, as a first act I ask the regent to call those who have not been candidates without even knowing why".
Orlando then speaks of the reflections "that we should have made in the aftermath of the referendum" and, referring to Renzi, attacks those who "stealth and shoot at the headquarters according to a strategy inaugurated by Chairman Mao Zedong". Finally, the Minister of Justice invites not to cut ties with those who voted elsewhere but continue to look at what happens inside the Democratic Party ".
RENTI'S NEWS
"I do not give up. I resign as secretary of the Democratic Party as it should be done after a defeat. But let's not give up, we will never leave the future to others". These are the words written by Matteo Renzi in Enews and published a few hours before the start of the Pd direction: "We have lost a battle, but we have not lost the will to fight for a more just world", he adds: "Thank you for these wonderful years working together. The future will come back sooner or later”.
