Intermarine SpA (IMMSI industrial group – IMS.MI) e Leonardo Spa (LDO.MI) have signed – in the form of a Temporary Business Grouping – with NAVARM – Directorate of Naval Armaments of the General Secretariat of Defense and National Armaments Directorate, a contract for the supply of naval units for the search and clearance of mines – Coastal New Generation Minehunters (CNG/C) and related integrated logistical support, del value of 1,6 billion for the construction of 5 units and approximately 1 billion in options for the completion of the program.
With reference to the basic "tranche", Intermarine's share is 1,165 billion euros, corresponding to approximately 73% and that of Leonardo is 0,430 billion euros, which corresponds to approximately 27%. A similar distribution also applies to the optional "tranches". Intermarine has the role of agent, will be the design authority of the Naval Units and will provide the platform system; Leonardo has the role of principal, design authority and supplier of the combat system.
Il contract signed today is the result of a path characterized by important investments in R&D activities on new materials and innovative and cutting-edge production technologies. In particular, it follows an intense activity of preliminary studies conducted in relation to the contract signed in 2021 between Intermarine and NAVARM focused on "Risk reduction studies and definition of the CNG Unit project".
A revolution for the Italian navy
The start of program will allow the Italian Navy to equip itself with highly innovative minehunters which, thanks to the most modern construction techniques and advanced combat system solutions capable of guaranteeing a high level of integration and automation of operations, will represent a world unique in terms of expressed operational capabilities and cutting-edge technologies cutting edge in the specialized sector of assets for the control, defense of the seabed and critical underwater infrastructures.
The program responds to the need for renewal of National Mine Countermeasures Component in a historical moment characterized by growing international tensions and by the growing threats posed in the maritime dimension, above and below the surface, as evidenced by the recent ongoing conflicts in the areas of national strategic interest (Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, Red Sea, Persian Gulf and Baltic Sea).
The role of the new minehunters
I Coastal New Generation Minehunters, thanks to the exclusive characteristics of the hulls (resistance to shocks generated by underwater explosions and low magneto-acoustic signature) to which are added the potentiality operating offered by most modern technologies of the combat system - such as sonar and multi-domain command and control, including integrated management of unmanned vehicles - will be able to carry out a wide spectrum of missions. These include the clearance of mined areas and so-called seabed surveillance operations for the control and protection of critical underwater infrastructures (i.e. oil & gas pipelines and maritime data networks) and the protection of cultural heritage and the marine environment.
With a length of approximately 63 metres and a displacement of approximately 1.300 tons, the CNG/Cs will stand out for their ability to conduct reclamation operations by operating within potentially minefields, guaranteeing the safety of the crews, using different types of autonomous vehicles as effectiveness multipliers and strengthening of discovery and defense capabilities.
Innovation and new opportunities for Italy
The CNG/C, due to their technical and operational characteristics, will be the most innovative Mine Countermeasures Units in the world, reaffirming the role of Italy as a leading country from a technological and doctrinal point of view in the sector of Mine Warfare and the Underwater Dimension. In an international context in which all the navies of NATO and the most advanced countries must renew their fleets of conventional minehunters, the CNG program will undoubtedly represent a game changer, a source of interest and potential for export and international cooperation activities .
Naval units will be produced at i Intermarine shipyards in Sarzana (La Spezia), with significant employment implications which will see a significant increase in the company workforce. The entire combat system, composed of the cyber-resilient SADOC 4 command and control system, advanced radar and electro-optical sensors, a new broadband sonar with mine detection and classification capabilities, as well as an integrated multi -communications bandwidth and data link to ensure the highest and most effective level of interoperability, will be produced and supplied by Leonardo.
