It is more and more chaos in Brazil after the suspension, by a judge in Brasilia, of the appointment offormer president Lula as head of cabinet in Dilma Rousseff's government: position assigned to avoid his arrest in the investigation into the Petrobras scandal. After the publication of the intercepted phone call between Dilma and her predecessor, tension has risen further in public opinion and other violent clashes have broken out in the streets and squares of the largest cities in the South American country.
In the evening and into the night, the Brazilian police used tear gas and stun grenades to contain the demonstrators who took to the streets to demand the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff: Thousands had gathered in front of the headquarters of the presidency and Congress, in the capital Braslia. In São Paulo, however, a stronghold of the opposition, thousands of demonstrators marched on Avenida Paulista, one of the city's main avenues, to demand the resignation of the Head of State and the workers' party. “Brazil is not Venezuela”, chanted the protesters, especially young people and employees. The protests were held after MPs revived impeachment proceedings against Rousseff. Demonstrations in support of Rousseff are expected for today in over 30 cities across the country.
