It was the same Romano Prodi to give with pain the sad announcement of the sudden passing of his wife Flavia Franzoni, economist and expert on welfare, 76 years old, always close to the former prime minister with whom she married in 1969 and with whom she has lived inseparably, really always together, all her life.
She practically died in Prodi's arms during a trek to Assisimarred by a violent storm. Graduated from the University of Bologna in economics with Nino Andreatta, who was Prodi's mentor, Franzoni was an economist expert in welfare and for years had directed the Iress, the Emilian regional institute that deals with social policies. Throughout his life it was unimaginable to think of Prodi without seeing the discreet and intelligent figure of his wife, to whom the former prime minister always listened with great attention. Mrs. Flavia also followed her husband during Prodi's premiership, during all the electoral campaigns and during the leadership of the European Commission. "Don't call me Prodi's wife" she used to shy away.
