Tesla di Elon Musk is no longer satisfied with just selling electric cars. Now it aims to become the electricity supplier in the UK, bringing energy “home-made” directly in English, Scottish and Welsh homes. This is reported by BBC, according to which the subsidiary Tesla Energy Ventures Limited has officially submitted to the British Energy and Gas Regulator, Of average, a request for license to sell electricity to residential and business customers. If the application is approved, Tesla could enter the retail energy market as early as next year.
However, the context is not the most favorable. In July 2025, the Enrollment page Tesla in the UK have fallen by almost 60%, while in Germany the decline exceeded 55%. In the ten key European markets, sales fell by 45% overall, due to growing competition from rivals such as the Chinese BYD.
From Texas to the UK: The Tesla Electric Model
The idea that Tesla wants to bring to the UK takes inspiration from the US experience, in particular from the service Tesla Electric Active in Texas for three years, customers who own Tesla electric cars or Powerwall home batteries can:
- charge the batteries during the time slots when energy costs less;
- use the stored energy during consumption peaks;
- resell it to the network, becoming prosumers (consumers and producers at the same time).
The goal is to replicate this system in the UK, where Tesla has already sold over 250 electric cars and tens of thousands of Powerwalls: a user base that represents immediate potential for the integration of energy services.
Tesla UK: From Manufacturer to Potential Retail Energy Supplier
Tesla has entered the British energy market already in 2020, obtaining a license to produce Electricity—particularly from solar sources—but without the right to sell it directly. Two years ago, a job posting for an energy operations manager in Europe hinted at the intention to expand into direct supply.
Now the strategy becomes concrete: at the end of July, Andrew Payne, head of Tesla's European energy operations, has filed an application with Ofgem for a license to sell energy to residential and business customers. The regulator officially confirmed the application on its website, noting that, if approved, it will be the first time ever that Tesla Energy Ventures Limited will operate in this specific sector of retail electricity supply outside the United States.
The authorization could arrive within the canonical nine months, paving the way for a debut as early as 2026 and putting Tesla in direct competition with the major operators in the United Kingdom. For the American group, it would be a further diversification, following its activities in electric vehicles, solar energy and home storage systems.
