Government shakes up after the referendum: Minister Santanché also resigns.

Government shakes up after the referendum: Minister Santanché also resigns.

The government has shaken up after the landslide victory against the justice reform. The suspects were removed, at the request of Palazzo Chigi, and then the undersecretary resigned. Andrea Delmaster and the head of the cabinet of the Keeper of the Seals Carlo NordioGiusi Bartolozzi (not to be investigated but evidently considered co-responsible for the referendum flop), after a long tug of war, even the Minister of Tourism finally gave in to the pressure Daniela Santanchè, which in truth has been under investigation for a long time, but is only now paying the consequences.

“Dear Giorgia – wrote Santanché in the letter of resignation addressed to the Prime Minister and party colleague – I resign, as you officially wished, my resignation from the role of minister that you had wanted to entrust to me and which I believe I have carried out to the best of my ability and without any drawbacks. I thank you for the recognition and for the trust you have shown me during these years of leading the Ministry of Tourism. I wanted (and I hope you will understand) to make it publicly clear that it was you who asked me to leave this role because, as I have always said, I would only resign at your explicit and public request.

I wanted it to be clear, for the sake of my honor, that I am taking a step back, not only because of a request that the leader of my Party deems useful and appropriate. I was and am keen to emphasize that to date my criminal record is spotless and that the redundancy fund issue hasn't even been referred to trial. Yesterday, perhaps brusquely (you'll understand my state of mind), I told you I wasn't willing to resign immediately because I wanted it to be separate from my comments on the referendum, because I don't want to be the scapegoat for a defeat that certainly wasn't my fault, given the outcome in Lombardy and even in my own municipality," continued the now former Minister of Tourism.

"I also wanted," he concluded, "my resignation to be separate from the contingent and very different matter involving the Honorable Del Mastro, who is also paying a high price. Having clarified this, I have no difficulty saying 'I obey' and doing what you ask of me. I won't hide a bit of bitterness over the outcome of my ministerial journey, but in my life I'm used to paying my own bills and often those of others as well. I care more about our friendship and the future of our movementNews of Daniela Santanché's resignation broke during a session of the Chamber of Deputies, sparking applause from the opposition. Democratic Party secretary Elly Schlein challenged: "What if there are early elections? As secretary of the leading opposition party, we will be ready whenever elections are called."
