FS: Trenitalia's new hybrid Intercity trains with a renewed brand are leaving

News for Trenitalia Intercity trains. The leader of the Passenger Hub of the FS Group has launched a new brand for Intercity, with new logos, service levels and a renewed livery for trains. They were also presented seven new hybrid trains will connect Calabria, Basilicata and Puglia, the first financed with 60 million euros from the Pnrr.

The presentation of the new trains took place on Friday 22 March at the Reggio Calabria station, with the presence of the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, and the CEO of Trenitalia, Luigi Corradi. The event was also attended by the Deputy Mayor of Reggio Calabria, Paolo Brunetti, and the Tourism Councilor of the Calabria Region, Emma Staine.

The first hybrid Intercity will leave today, March 25, from Reggio Calabria towards Taranto, with other trains gradually added. From 9 June, services will extend to Bari and Lecce.

Latest generation hybrid train

Trenitalia's new hybrid train, manufactured by Hitachi, combines advanced technology with the typical Intercity travel experience. It will be sustainable, innovative and will offer a more comfortable and ecological service thanks to its triple fuel supply and reduced CO2 emissions. With 4 carriages and 200 seats, it also features seats made with 100% fabric made from recycled plastics and spaces dedicated to passengers with disabilities and bicycles.

The rebranding of Intercity

The presentation of the new hybrid trains also marked the launch of the rebranding of Intercity, characterized by a new slogan “Free to Travel”, a renewed logo and a new name for the service levels.

Il new logo by Trenitalia for Intercity features shades of blue and white to underline the Italian nature of the company and recall the crystal clear waters of the sea along the coasts crossed by the trains. The completely revised livery accentuates the blue to recall the Italian origins of the fleet, with darker shades for Intercity Notte, creating an immediate link with the service offered to customers.

In addition to the logo, another element of change includes the renaming of service levels for Intercity Giorno and Intercity Notte, in order to align them with the brand image, future-oriented, clear and coherent. Classes become "Plus" for first class e "Easy" for the second of the IC Day; while for the Night service you will have the options of “Easy”, “Comfort”, “Relax” and “Superior”.

In 2023, over 16 million people traveled on Intercity and Intercity Night trains, which offered 124 daily national and 48 international Eurocity connections.

“I am particularly proud of this Hybrid Intercity which represents an important step forward to guarantee travelers and all our stakeholders more sustainable and efficient mobility. The hybrid trains that will connect Calabria, Basilicata and Puglia are latest generation vehicles that are more comfortable and consume less. Furthermore, the triple power supply, battery electric and diesel, also allows you to travel on non-electrified lines, with greater benefits for the environment compared to old generation trains. The investment is part of a broader plan for the South, again financed with Pnrr funds, which includes another 140 million for 70 night carriages that will travel to and from Sicily" he declared Louis Corradi, Chief Executive Officer of Trenitalia.
