Matteo Renzi of Italia Viva e Carlo Calenda of Action will they step aside after the sensational debacle in the European elections? Renzi, despite the 200 thousand preferences collected, has already said yes, agreeing on the fact that the Lib Dem area needs new protagonists. Calenda, as usual, wavers: first yes, then no, then who knows. It is a shame that a liberal democratic and pro-European center area (let's not talk about the Third Pole anymore because it doesn't bring luck) which potentially represents at least 7% but probably more of the electorate has no representation in Europe and it is useless to go over the responsibilities of defeat. Better to think about the future and “The paper” which has always been close to that area raises the idea of a return to the field of the former Margherita leader Francesco Rutelli. It is not a trivial idea, assuming that the former mayor of Rome wants to return and revive the downtown area. But starting from the tail is not the wisest choice. Before thinking about the successors of Renzi and Calenda, we should understand two things: 1) what is the playing field? What electoral law will the constitutional reform bring with it (premiership whether or not) under discussion in Parliament and the center will be able to live an autonomous life or will be destined to become the reformist offshoot of the Pd? 2) what is the vision of Italy which should inspire the relaunch of the Lib Dem area? There Meloni has the premiership as its flag, the Schlein the minimum wage and public health and the center?
Without answering these preliminary and at the same time crucial questions, the search for new leaders will not be enough to revive the center. Courage and best wishes.
