Yet another tile hits Virginia Raggi. The mayor of Rome would have benefited from a life insurance policy worth 30 thousand euros from Salvatore Romeo, former head of the secretariat, forced to take a step back after Raffaele Marra's arrest for corruption.
The story dates back to January 2016, before Raggi became mayor and decided to give him a top role in the new municipal administration, tripling his salary.
The Rome prosecutor's office discovered the existence of the policy as part of the investigation into the appointments in the Campidoglio. Initially, the beneficiary of the life insurance policy indicated by Romeo was another, but a few months before the elections, the former head of the secretariat would have modified the contract.
“Did I know about the policy I was a beneficiary of? No, absolutely not, I learned it this evening, I'm shocked – said the mayor as she left the offices where the interrogation was held – I clarified, I answered all the questions. There is a lot of work to do here in Rome, we have to carry it forward”.
The first citizen of the capital is already under investigation for abuse of office and forgery in public deed following the appointment of Renato Marra, brother of Raffaele, at the head of the Department of Tourism in Rome.
The new storm could have very serious political and judicial implications. From this last point of view, in the event that Raggi fails to provide the prosecutor with plausible justifications, new accusations could arrive, even more serious than the abuse of office. At that point it will be very difficult for Beppe Grillo and for the 5 Star Movement to be able to defend it once again.
