Pd, the assembly on the edge of the split: today the last round

National Assembly of the Democratic Party with bated breath the one that opens this morning in Rome with a report by the outgoing secretary Matteo Renzi. Either there is a reconciliation in extremis between the various souls of the party or there will be a split. The minority of the Democratic Party, led by Bersani and Emiliano, said clearly yesterday that, if the congress is not postponed to September, it will leave and there will be a split.

However, the Renzian majority replied that the ultimatums of the minority "are inadmissible" and want to open the congress immediately to celebrate it before the local elections in June, while the general political consultation moves away either to the autumn or even to the beginning of 2018, leaving in saddle the Gentiloni government.

Today's meeting opens in the utmost uncertainty: on paper an agreement seems difficult between a majority and a minority who distrust each other but in politics, as we know, everything is possible and the split, although very probable , it's not obvious. He will mediate until the last minute and today the Democratic Party is destined to experience a day of passion, the most difficult since he was born.

Behind the clash on the dates of the congress there is a battle for power but the dispute is not as trivial as it appears: in reality it is a referendum on Renzi's leadership and above all on the political line. Continue the battle of reforms to modernize the country by seeking consensus even outside the traditional perimeter of the center-left or cancel and stop the reforms of the Renzi government by recovering the consensus of the CGIL. They are two completely different visions of Italy which, beyond the personal spite, it is difficult to reconcile.

Today Emiliano, Bersani, Speranza and Rossi will evaluate whether there is still space to wage their minority battle within the Democratic Party or not, while D'Alema already considers himself out and will not participate in the assembly today. Whatever happens, the reflections of the assembly on the stability of the Gentiloni government, on the future of the legislature and on the next electoral appointment will not be lacking.
