Francesco Lojacono, Palermo 1838 – Palermo 1915. Among the most important painters of the Italian nineteenth century. He was primarily a landscaper. He moved to Naples in 1856 and entered the school of the Palizzi brothers but during some trips to Tuscany he was also influenced by the school of the Macchiaioli.
In 1870 he exhibited the painting The Oreto Valley in Vienna in Paris and two years later he was appointed Professor of Landscape at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. In 1874 his works were exhibited in Bordeaux. Francesco Lojacono earned the nickname of "Thief of the Sun" (or Painter of the Sun) for the ability to give brightness to his works.
His works, in the 80s and 90s reached rather important values entering many private collections. Subsequently, together with the decline in interest of this period, his works have been depreciated considerably. An example "Children pêchant in the bay of Palerme, on the slopes of Mont Pellegrino” auctioned for €103,700.

In the last two years there has been a renewed demand for works by Lojacono, but without ever returning to the previously recorded estimates. His favorite paintings are certainly the seascapes and landscapes with the "solar" colors of Sicily. Even the auction passages are not many, as if to mean that at the moment the works are in the hands of collectors who, in order not to devalue them, tend not to offer them on the market. Currently, in the case of works of high pictorial quality, they are to be considered a good investment, provided that the sun shines again for 800th century art.
