The new supercomputing system (High Performance Computing – HPC) HPC6, completed and started in November 2024, significantly enhances the computational capacity of the Eni's Green Data Center in Ferrera Erbognone, in the province of Pavia, bringing it from 70 to 606 million billion mathematical operations performed in one second, that is, 606 PFlops peakIn the Top500 ranking it ranks sixth globally and first in the world among the supercomputers industrial use. Furthermore, the system is designed according to the most advanced energy efficiency criteria.
One of the key elements of HPC6 is the new liquid cooling system able to optimize the absorption of heat produced by the new machine and make it more energy efficient. HPC6 strengthens Eni's digitalisation and innovation process and represents, at the same time, a crucial asset for achieving our decarbonisation strategy and for addressing the challenges of energy transition.
HPC6, a lever to support the energy transition
HPC6 represents the latest generation of our supercomputerIts performance makes it the most powerful in the world for industrial purposes, sharing the architecture of the most advanced systems. These characteristics allow it to play a crucial role throughout the energy supply chain and will be used, in particular, to optimize theoperation of industrial plants, improve the accuracy of the geological and fluid dynamic studies for CO2 storage and to develop more performing batteries. It will also be used to optimize the biofuel supply chain and to simulate the behavior of the plasma in the magnetic confinement fusion.
The high computing power of HPC6 helps strengthen our transformation journey by accelerating the development of new high-potential businesses related to the energy transition. It also strengthens the synergy between Eni and its satellite companies and creates strategic value for the launch of new external collaborations.
