The best Italian restaurant outside the national borders in the world? Need to go in Toronto in Canada per Don Alfonso 1890, the historic sign of large Mediterranean restaurant in Sant'Agata sui due golfi now internationally recognized, brought to Michelin stars from Alfonso Iaccarino and today firmly guided by his son Ernest, also present a Macau and New Zealand, opened in 2018 in the Canadian metropolis.
This was decreed by the ranking of The Best Italian Restaurants in the World 2022 - Prosecco DOC Award signed by 50 Top Italy, the online guide created by LSDM, the international congress of signature cuisine, and by the newspaper Luciano Pignataro Wine&Food Blog.
In second position he ranks the Fiola, of Washington DC, chef Fabio Trabocchi's flagship restaurant. In third place From Vittorio Shanghai, another great name in Italian catering linked to the figures of the Cerea brothers from Brusaporto. In the top five too Otto e Mezzo - Bombana, of Hong Kong, and Sesame, from Marrakesh.
The Guide also awarded the Special Awards which went to Massimiliano Sena, of the Il Lago di Ginevra restaurant, Chef of the Year 2022 – Pastificio dei Campi Award; to Osteria 57, of New York Innovation and Sustainability Award 2022 – D'Amico Award, to Ornellaia, of Zurich, Best Wine List Award 2022 – Prosecco DOC Award, to Nino Graziano, of Semifreddo in Moscow, Model of Inspiration Award 2022 – D'Amico Award.
Don Alfonso 1890 Toronto was also awarded the prize for Lunch of the Year 2022 – Mulino Caputo Award.
Of the 50 establishments present in the ranking well 7 are located in the United States e the same in France; 5 are venues in the UK and Japan; 3 in China; 2 in Canada, as well as Australia, Germany, Switzerland and Singapore; with one restaurant each in South Africa, Sweden, Spain, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Russia, Austria, Brazil, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Belgium, Denmark and Morocco. A total of 23 countries are represented, where there is therefore at least one large restaurant serving Italian cuisine.
“We certainly don't discover – underline Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro and Albert Sapere, the three curators of the editorial project – the success of Italian cuisine in the world. What we particularly notice, however, in recent years, is a significant increase in average quality. Slowly the stereotypes and false myths that surround the Bel Paese's gastronomic culture are fading away and foreigners are thus managing to discover the true Italian flavors even outside the peninsula. And it is certainly no coincidence that this award sees Prosecco DOC as the protagonist, a brand with global success, a true standard bearer of Italian spirit throughout the world”.
