The Government at the decisive sprint for the corruption decree. Today the Minister of Justice Paola Severino announced that the question of confidence on a maxi-amendment entirely replacing the provision on corruption. "On behalf of the government, expressly authorized by the Council of Ministers, I place the question of confidence on a single amendment which entirely replaces the text from article 1 to article 27". Prime Minister Mario Monti is also present in the Chamber for the debate.
The Minister of Justice also expressed regret for the criticisms received on this provision (in particular from the banks of Italia dei Valori), which has been in the eye of the storm for months due to the evident difficulty in submitting it serenely to Parliament's scrutiny. “This is a law – said Severino – which today even more than yesterday we all deem it indispensable for the country, a law of which I believe Italy can feel proud. Today it seems that this provision is waste paper and that months have been lost, but it is not true that we have not built anything. Playing talking crickets is a very popular sport, I too belonged to this category but you have to go here to understand the effort behind every decree".
Severino then turned particularly to the IDV benches, who had harshly criticized the measure over the days: "A dutiful reply from a government of honest people - said the minister - and which intervenes on what was said yesterday in the courtroom and that is that we do not want the measure because we are friends of friends of the corrupt: we cannot allow this because it is not true and it enhances the forms of demolition that are present in the country and which prevent it from growing".
“The important thing – concluded Severino – is that for the first time in Italian history the problem of corruption is tackled promptly unlike when, at the time of Clean Hands, politics tried to curb the action of the judiciary".
