Two years after the appointment of Flavio Cattaneo as CEO, Enel recorded a 35% increase in market value, reaching 83,2 billion euros. An incontrovertible result, the one examined by Bloomberg, and even if it will never be possible to have exact proof of the “what if” with another manager, the same financial agency explains instead that in those numbers there are indeed the merits of the CEO. Bloomberg has in fact certified theCattaneo-effect in the usual section dedicated to the analysis of CEOs with which it monitors and analyses the impact of the managers of the main listed companies, promptly evaluating the company performance from the exact date of their appointment.
How much is the Cattaneo effect worth?
In the case of Enel, an interesting picture emerged. Bloomberg calculated, for example, that anyone who had invested 1.000 euros in May 2023, i.e. at the time of the CEO's installation, today would have a value in its portfolio, net of the reinvestment of gross dividends, of 1.535,31 euros, with a yield of over 50% in two years. From the date of publication of the lists (April 13, 2023) this value would rise to approximately 60%. In a context of volatile markets and geopolitical uncertainties, Enel has therefore demonstrated a good capacity for cash generation with a total dividend distribution of 0,90 euros per share. The 12-month dividend yield of 5,7% is, in fact, positioned at very attractive levels for investors, who are always looking for stable returns.
Cattaneo himself bought Enel shares for 40 million
It must be said that the first to believe in the potential of this strategic plan was the Milanese manager himself, who during his mandate, He himself bought Enel shares and its subsidiary Endesa for a value of approximately 40 million euros. Another aspect that Bloomberg particularly appreciated is the parameters of environmental, social and governance sustainability. In ESG scores, the Italian energy group has achieved significant results: on a scale of 0 to 10, Enel's environmental rating is 7,13, a score that places it ahead of 99% of competitors, confirming itself as a benchmark for sustainable energy transition. Also in the ranking on social sustainability, with a score of 5,70, Enel is among the leaders in the sector, remaining ahead of 96% of other energy companies. Finally, on the governance front, the score of 6,98, which demonstrates the quality of decision-making processes and management transparency, allows the company to be ahead of 82% of competitors.
He has the 15th highest compensation among the managers of the Ftse Mib
In his analysis, Bloomberg Finally, he highlighted how Enel's governance structure reflects international standards, with a balanced composition of the board of directors: nine total councilors, four of whom are women, and an average age of 61. As for remuneration, CEO Cattaneo was recognized in 2024 a compensation of 3,6 million euros, of which 3,3 million between salary and bonus. A salary that brings him "only" to fifteenth position in the special ranking of the compensation of top managers of the Ftse Mib index.
