William Henry Margetson. How much is his art worth?

William Henry Margetson. How much is his art worth?

William Henry Margetson was a British figurative painter whose subject matter was primarily Victorian-era women. Born in 1861 in London, UK, he was educated at Dulwich College and the Royal Academy of Arts, before becoming a Fellow of the Royal Institute in 1909. Although the artist's subjects were varied, he made a living by undertaking portrait commissions. Today, his portrait of the poet Lord Alfred Tennyson hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in London. His later work was influenced by Pre-Raphaelite painters such as William Holman Hunt and the work of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. Margetson died on January 2, 1940 in Wallingford, UK.

Particularly known for his photos of very beautiful girls, usually alone and large on canvas, and usually with short hair and hats when they are modern subjects. As well as girls and modern portraits Margetson also produced some religious and some allegorical and classical/antique paintings. Classic allegorical subjects also include The Sea Hath its Pearls, (a girl with diaphanous curtains) in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australia, and the much-reproduced Who Strays in Love's Domain showing three such girls and a ugly Cupid on the beach, 1904. His wife, Hellen Hatton, was also an artist.

Investment value: Due to the limited availability of works on the market, we have not found valuable works at auction in recent years, having now entered the exclusive circuit of collectors who prefer Pre-Raphaelitism or, in this case, British painting of the time. In addition to painting, the watercolor works are very interesting, also well kept in private collections and museums. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
