Terreferme Emilia 2012, the cultural heritage beyond the earthquake

A project by the regional directorate for cultural and landscape heritage of Emilia-Romagna is being staged at the Triennale di Milano with the Telecom Italia Foundation in order to document the destructive effects of the earthquake on cultural heritage and the activities carried out for its protection and recovery .

Terreferme Emilia 2012, the cultural heritage beyond the earthquake

Two years after the earthquake that hit the lands of the lower Po valley between the provinces of Ferrara, Modena, Bologna and Reggio Emilia on 20 and 29 May 2012, it was presented yesterday with the setting up of a multimedia and interactive exhibition at the Milan Triennale " Mainland. Emilia 2012: cultural heritage beyond the earthquake”, a project by the regional directorate for cultural and landscape heritage of Emilia-Romagna carried out with the Telecom Italia Foundation in order to document the destructive effects of the earthquake on the cultural heritage and the activities carried out its preservation and recovery.

Terreferme aims to be a permanent laboratory for the recording of data and information and for the development of best practices for intervention on cultural heritage affected by destructive natural events. The exhibition, which also makes use of the participation of various video artists and photographers, represents the first moment of visibility of this project.

All the activities following the catastrophic event produced an incredible amount of documentation which, also thanks to the special contribution of the Telecom Italia Foundation, was systematized and digitized and forms the basis of the exhibition. The project therefore explores the theme of documentation with the aim of developing new and more effective IT tools for the creation of a GIS (Geographical Information System) for the georeferencing of cultural heritage for the crater area: an advanced knowledge tool unique in our country that represents a point of reference for the administrations and subjects involved in the protection of heritage.
