The month of January 2025 has seen an increase in electricity demand in Italy, with the need having reached the 26,9 billion in kWh, scoring a + 1 % compared to the same month of the previous year and a + 3,7 % compared to January 2023. This data, made known by Terna in its monthly report, fits into a context of relatively stable cyclical variations: despite the month having had one working day less than January 2024 (21 against 22 days), the average monthly temperatures remained almost unchanged compared to last year, although higher than the average of the last ten years by approximately 1,4 degrees centigrade. Once corrected for the effects of calendar e temperature, the seasonally adjusted variation shows an increase of1,5 %.
At a territorial level, the January trend variation was positive everywhere: + 0,9 % al North part, + 0,8 % al Centro e + 1,3 % al South e Islands.
Domestic production and imports of electricity
In the month of January 2025, the demand for electricity in Italy was mainly satisfied by national production, which covered the82,3 % of the overall requirement. The remaining 17,7 % was satisfied by importing energy from abroad, with a monthly foreign balance of 4,8 TWh, down by 14,9 % compared to the same period of the previous year (5,6 TWh). This decrease is the result of an increase in exports (+ 37,3 %) and a contraction of the cheap imports (-12,4%), reflecting a change in the dynamics of international energy trade.
Production composition and storage capacity
La net national production of electricity in January reached 22,2 billion in kWh, with a contribution from the renewables equal to 31,9 % of total demand, compared to 33,8 % recorded in the same month of the previous year. The production thermoelectric saw a significant increase in 11,5 %, while all other renewable sources have suffered declines, mainly due to lower natural supply. In particular, production wind recorded a decrease of 8,7 %, water of the 5,1 %, Geothermal of1,1 % e PV with the 0,5 %. In addition, the month of January saw an increase in renewable capacity in exercise of 421 MW, bringing the total to 13.307 MWh of storage capacity, equivalent to 5.727 MW of nominal power, distributed over approximately 748.000 storage systems in Italy.
Trends in electricity consumption
The index IMCEI, elaborated by Terna, which monitors the industrial consumption of 'energy-intensive' companies, has recorded a decrease in 2,4 % compared to January 2024. Among the growing sectors, we can highlight the mechanics and food, while some sectors have seen a decline, including non-ferrous metals, means of transport, chemistry, cement, lime and plaster, ceramics and glassworks e paper mill.
In terms cyclical, the value of the electricity demand, seasonally adjusted and corrected for the effects of calendar e temperature, it turns out practically stationary compared to December 2024 with a slight increase in + 0,2 %.
The index IMSER (Monthly Services Index), published by Terna based on monthly data provided by the main distribution network operators (E-Distribution, UNARETI, A-Networks, Edyna e The fall), recorded at November 2024 a slightly positive variation of the + 0,9 % compared to November 2023. For the period January-November 2024, a growth is observed compared to the same period in 2023, with an increase of + 3,4 %.
