Matteo Renzi wins the Primaries hands down and returns as secretary of the Democratic Party. The former premier collected 72% against 19,5% of the minister of the justice minister, Andrea Orlando and against 8,5% of the governor of Puglia, Michele Emiliano.
But, beyond the result, largely predictable on the eve, what counts and marks the success of the Primaries is the high participation of citizens and militants in the vote: almost 2 million, less than last time, but still a a sign of the party's vitality that so far no other political force has even remotely managed to imitate. especially if one takes into account that the Primaries take place in the middle of a long bridge and after the mini-split between Bersani and D'Alema, which seems to have been compensated for by the accession of new groups of citizens.
"It is a celebration of democracy, now forward together" commented Renzi immediately, who added: "It is not the revenge on December 4th but the beginning of a new game, completely different". And again:”With us the people: this is the alternative to populism, we are not those of algorithms. I know that the Democratic Party cannot do it alone, but we are the only anti-Grillo ones".
Now of course it will be necessary to see how Renzi intends to spend his victory politically and that is whether he will force the timing of the political elections or support the Gentiloni government until the natural end of the legislature and above all how he will move in the face of the electoral law and that is whether he will confirm the prize or not of majority to the list rather than to the coalition, whether or not it will be willing to overcome the blocked leaders and at what level it will propose to raise the threshold for accessing lists to Parliament.
The line that Renzi will propose towards Europe will also be fundamental, especially if Macron wins in France, with whom the secretary of the Democratic Party has long had a feeling, widely reciprocated.
