Tax cuts are not an alternative to fight against evasion. To say it is the Minister of Economy Pier Carlo Padoan during his speech at the conference “Less taxes, less spending. Binomial of recovery” held at the headquarters of Confcommercio in Rome.
For the minister the tax cut “it is effective if it is credible, and it is credible if it is permanent. To be so, it must derive from spending cuts” and therefore be sustainable, as is necessary for a country with a high public debt like Italy. The tax cut, explains Padoan, is part of a "radical process of modernization of the country and must create wealth and jobs after years of crisis" and "will contribute to growth and employment".
Padoan then replied to those who, especially in the minority of the Democratic Party, "claim that instead of cutting taxes, we need to step up the fight against tax evasion". The two things, for the minister, "they are not alternatives, but complementary“. Finally, the Economy Minister denied differences with Renzi on fiscal policy: "If I hadn't shared these measures before the Prime Minister's announcement, I would be here today, but with another job".
