Italian Banks and Old Economy Beat Cryptocurrencies: Who Gained the Most on the Stock Exchange in the Last Four Years

Since the Bitcoin has broken through the 100 thousand dollar capitalization threshold, everyone is crazy about the queen of cryptovalute, even if the risks of investing in assets disconnected from the real economy and highly speculative are not strong, but very strong. But, as he told the other day on Sun 24 Hours the excellent Morya Longo, the beauty is that, by staying closer to home and taking fewer risks, you can earn more. Longo has lined up the Italian stocks that have outperformed Bitcoin in the last four years and the list cannot fail to surprise because often it is not the companies at the forefront of technology that have achieved stellar performances but the banks and companies of the Old Economy. Here is a comparison: since January 2021, Bitcoin has gained 193% but at Business Square four banks have done better, much better, and six other so-called traditional companies have done the same. Here are the numbers: in four years (the starting point is always January 2021), Unicredit has practically doubled Bitcoin by gaining 397% but so have the Bpm bank (+ 327%), B for Bank (+ 309%), la Popular of Sondrio (+263%). The increase in interest rate-related revenues has boosted bank profits, but also the generous dividends and the speculative appeal that comes from the first moves of the game of risk have given the banks a boost.

Not only banks are better than Bitcoin

But the world of credit was not the only one to outperform cryptocurrencies. The stock also did very well Leonardo which in four years has seen a 341% increase (against Bitcoin's 193%) and the progress of Ovs and D'Amico International Shipping and three Made in Italy technology companies such as Maire Technimont, Txt e-Solutions e Dba Group.

What is the moral that emerges from the stock market performance numbers? That diversification remains the mantra of financial investments but diversifying with less risk is better. And that foreign-philia does not always pay. Sometimes it is enough to look around and discover that even near us there are opportunities not to be missed.
