Cigarette increases 2025: new prices start on January 23, here's how much they cost

From today, January 23, 2025, Italian smokers have to deal with a new increase in cigarette prices, cigars and rolling tobacco. Fortunately, this is not the exorbitant price increase that was feared in the past, but a moderate increase, which is hovering over a few cents (between 10 and 30 cents per pack). While it's not a huge blow to your wallet, this increase will still have a long-term impactIt's the fault of the excise duties that have been updated.

In particular, 63 cigarette brands will be involved, 37 Types of Cigars e 14 Variations of Rolling Tobacco. Customs agency and monopolies (Adm) has new price lists made public through a note on your site, where it is possible find the complete list of the products that will undergo changes. Among the most famous brands, there are Marlboro, Chesterfield and Philip Morris, with increases that they range from 10 to 30 cents per packet. For example, a pack of Marlboro Gold KS goes up to 6,50 euros, while Philip Morris Filter Kings go up to 5,50 euros. Even the cut tobacco is no exception, with prices that hover around 17,50 euros for 70-gram packs.

Cigarette Prices: What's Behind the Increase?

The price increase was urged by producers and importers, who requested a cost adjustment in response to the increase in production and distribution costs. This is a modest increase compared to other more significant intervention hypotheses, such as an increase of five euros per package proposed during the debate on the budget law, but never implemented.

The increase is then inserted within a broader tax policy aimed at discouraging tobacco consumption, with a gradual increase in excise duties. The 2023 budget law had already set the excise duty at 29,30 euros per thousand cigarettes, with a further increase to 29,50 euros for 2025. Adjustments that are part of a series of measures aimed at reducing cigarette consumption and raising funds for public health.

Cigarette prices: it won't be the only increase of the year

Today's one It's not the only increase planned for this year. The 2024 budget law has in fact provided for a further change to excise duties, setting a higher tax for 2025, with the possibility of further increases throughout the year.

The goal is to encourage consumers to reduce tobacco consumption and to discourage the new generations from approaching this vice. Although the increases are not dramatic, they are part of a picture of constantly rising costs which, in the long term, could have significant effects on consumption.
