Sotheby's celebrated the culture of Asia from March 14-21 with a week of curated and coordinated exhibitions, talks and events within the city at the Asia Week New York initiative.

A week entirely dedicated to the past and present of China which for this occasion coexist perfectly, attracting hundreds of collectors of Asian art to New York, who have always been collectors but also new investors increasingly attentive to this sector.

To highlight many works, such as a collection of jades from a private collection in North America and another of American origin, of white and blue porcelain. Contemporary China is represented by the S|2 exhibition-sale, “Shuimo / Water Ink: Chinese Contemporary Ink Paintings, with fourteen artists reinterpreting and renewing the art of Chinese ink painting.

Ink painting has been an essential component of Chinese culture for millennia. Shuimo's fourteen artists are considered to be at the forefront of this renaissance of this technique, with styles ranging from bold abstraction to the reinvigorated traditionalism of the personal and playful of figurative painting. From the simple elements of water and ink, new works of intimate subtlety and overwhelming emotional force emerge. There are exactly 45 contemporary works at auction and they are all of great interest.

A real success of awards for a total realized of 22,490,002 USD.
The best auction was a rare NORD SONG DYNASTY “DING” ivory colored bowl, estimated at USD 200,000 – 300,000 but reaching 2.225.000 USD. It is a slightly rounded bowl, skilfully carved on the inside with lotus leaf scrolling, the outside carved and modeled with three rows of overlapping vertical darker ivory leaves. Diameter 13,4cm

 

The Amaya Collection Modern and Contemporary Indian Art – New York | March 19, 2013

Fine Classical Chinese Paintings – New York | March 21, 2013

640 lots for this auction of high quality paintings and calligraphy dating from the 14th to the 20th century. The Qing Dynasty is well represented, with paintings by Wang Shimin, Wang Hui, Wang Yuanqi, Tang Dai and Shouping Yun. Particularly present is the section: calligraphy, the sale includes representative examples of Zhu Yunming, Zhang Bi, Wang Shouren, Dong Qichang, Fu Shan and He Shaoji.
