McDonald's: no to the peace sandwich with Burger King

World Peace Day will not have its own McWhopper. The proposal of Burger King to create a hybrid sandwich between its Whopper and the Big Mac of arch-rivals McDonald's was returned to the sender by the fast food chain with the yellow M.

“We really like your intentions – wrote on Facebook the McDonald's CEO Steve Eastbrook – but we believe our two brands can do more to make a real impact. We are committed every day all over the world to raise awareness among our customers, maybe you want to join us and do something significant and global? And then, every day, we acknowledge the fact that there is only simple and friendly commercial competition between us: certainly not something that can compare to the pain and suffering of war”.

Burger King had bought a page of advertising in the New York Times and the Chicago Tribune to launch its proposal to put aside the historic rivalry between the two brands on the occasion of the World Day of Peace.

The McWhopper, which allegedly had 6 ingredients from the Big Mac and six from the Whopper, was reportedly sold for just one day at a prefab restaurant assembled in Atlanta, which is located midway between Chicago (home of McDonald's) and Miami (home of Burger King). The proposal for a "cease-fire" in the sandwich war, however, fell on deaf ears.
