Wimbledon, Federer as a legend: he's in the final

Yet another feat of the Swiss champion, who at almost 36 years of age (he will be in less than a month) conquers the eleventh final on London grass, where he has already won seven of his 18 Grand Slam titles – Final Sunday against Cilic.

Wimbledon, Federer as a legend: he's in the final

Eternal. Infinite. Immortal. There are no more adjectives to describe Roger Federer, at the umpteenth feat of a career that began in 2001 and which saw the 36-year-old Swiss tennis player win 18 Grand Slam tournaments (with even 10 lost finals), more than anyone else in the history of tennis modern: own on the grass of Wimbledon, where Federer won his first major in 2003, the boy from Basel reached the final for the eleventh time, winning today against the Czech Thomas Berdych.

An absolute record (among the players of the Open era), the umpteenth, after the one filed a few days ago of the semifinals reached on the London grass (12), where he also equaled the record for overall wins (7, same as Sampras and Renshaw) and set the record for consecutive finals (7, from 2003 to 2009). What Federer will play against Cilic on Sunday will therefore be the 29th final in a Grand Slam tournament, an unrivaled record like that of the semifinals (41), consecutive finals (10, from 2005 Wimbledon to the 2007 US Open) and consecutive semifinals (23, from 2004 Wimbledon to 2010 Australian Open).

Federer therefore has the opportunity to reach 19 Grand Slam victories and above all the eighth at Wimbledon, his favorite garden, thus detaching Sampras and Renshaw to definitively occupy the highest step in Olympus of the most prestigious tennis tournament on the planet. However, the Croatian Marin Cilic is on the road to legend, who in the other semifinal overtook Querrey to reach his first final at Wimbledon and his second ever in a Slam, after that of the 2014 US Open which saw him then win against Nishikori. Federer has a positive record of 6 wins and only one loss in previous meetings with Cilic: the only knockout was the semifinal in Flushing Meadows which launched the Croatian to conquer the title.
