Whirlpool Naples: sled sale, unions are not enough

The transfer of the Whirlpool plant in Naples, which brings with it a lot of layoffs for i 430 workers employed in the factory, is postponed 12 from October to 31. This was announced by the Prime Minister, Giuseppe Conte, after meeting the trade unions at Palazzo Chigi on Wednesday morning to discuss the dispute. Also present was the Minister of Economic Development, Stefano Patuanelli. The delegations of Fiom, Fim, Uilm and Uglm they were led by their respective general secretaries: Francesca Re David, Marco Bentivogli, Rocco Palombella and Antonio Spera.

The postponement does not satisfy the workers' representatives, who ask for the complete withdrawal of the sale procedure of the Whirlpool factory, where washing machines are produced, to Passive refrigeration solutions (PRS), a company headed by Italian entrepreneurs but with registered office in Lugano.

“The suspension until the 31st is not a guarantee and legally it is of dubious legitimacy – he comments Welcome – But the Prime Minister knows these issues well. I agree with Minister Patuanelli: there must be a time when you look at the cards. We need to tell the company that we need more respect for the institutions, trade unions and workers. These are areas where closing factories is a gift to the Camorra. An industrial garrison is a garrison of legality. There are only Whirlpool and Hitachi left”.

Hard also the comment of Dogfish, which speaks of “an unfair act against the Government, trade unions and workers. They resold an availability against a procedure that would have ended on 31 October anyway. The sale would be the beginning of the end. We must continue to produce washing machines in the Naples plant, where production from Poland should be transferred. For us there is only one possibility and it is this: that the production of washing machines continues in Naples, there is no plan B”.

Meanwhile, Whirlpool he said he learned from the media that Patuanelli would be ready to convene a meeting with the company in the next 24 hours. The company confirms that it has expressed to Conte and the Minister of Development its willingness to resume discussions with the government and social partners and says it is "ready to consider suspending the current procedure ex. art. 47, the expiry of which is scheduled for next 12 October, up to and no later than 31 October".
