Weekend at the cinema, Oscar-winning films and news of the week

Here are the top new releases in theaters, so you know what to see this weekend.

To keep an eye on

Mom or dad, directed by Riccardo Milani, director of "Welcome president" and "Sorry if I exist".

The film, produced by Wildside, might seem, looking casually at the packaging and the cast, a rather classic Italian comedy, one of those that invade our cinemas without leaving too much trace of itself, but it starts from a very incorrect starting point which, if brought forward with consistency, it might make it something else.

In fact, in the film, Antonio Albanese and Paola Cortellesi are a couple who break up and start the divorce proceedings. There is a problem, however: neither of them, for various reasons, wants custody of the children. It will be the children who will have to choose to stay with, while the parents will try to convince them, with all the means at their disposal, to choose the other.

To be seen

Two of the most interesting releases come from the United States.

These are two dramatic films, which have obtained unanimous acclaim from critics and which land in our cinemas after having hoarded awards and nominations, including one, for both, for Best Film in the next night of the Oscars.

Manchester By The Seaby Kenneth Lonergan, starring Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams, tells the story of Lee, an isolated young man haunted by his own ghosts, forced to return home to Northern Massachusetts by the death of his brother and to face his own demons. seeking redemption, comfort, or simply a new sense of self and life.

Moonlight by Barry Jenkins, starring Trevante Rhodes and Maershala Ali, tells the story of Chiron, an African-American man who grows up and lives in a rough neighborhood of Miami, dominated by violence. Through the narration of three ages of his life (childhood, adolescence and adulthood) the central conflict of the film unfolds, that between the nature of Chiron, who is homosexual, and the environment in which he lives.

Other

Resident Evil 6by Paul W.S. Anderson.

If you are a fan of the saga, and you like zombies and explosions or, more simply, Milla Jovovich, run to see the last chapter. If, on the other hand, you think it's just the fantasy of a teenager unable to detach himself from the Joystick transformed into a far too long-lived film franchise, smile because it seems to be the last chapter..

To recover (for those who have missed them so far)

La la Land: if only because that's all we talk about and it seems increasingly probable that after the night of the Oscars we will have to discuss his victory. And arguing without knowledge of the facts is never nice.

I stop when I want – Masterclass: not always centered, but at times very funny. The sequel to Sidney Sibilia's debut film gets some laughs, but above all tries to trace the path of an Italian comedy capable of being epic too.
