The growth of Webuild continues in Romania, where the Italian Webuild (formerly Impregilo-Salini), one of the major world players in the construction of large complex infrastructures, was awarded in consortium with Salcef un new contract of the total value of 441 million euros to upgrade the Rhine-Danube corridor of the trans-European rail network di TEN-T transport.

The new contract concerns the modernization and doubling of Lot 4 of one of the most important railway lines in Romania, the Caransebes-Timişoara-Arad. A few days ago the Group had also signed a consortium the contract for lot 3, worth 291 million euros, after the one for the construction of lot 4 of the railway line that will connect Cluj-Napoca to Episcopia Bihor.

Contracts in Romania for 2 rise to 2022 billion

The contracts awarded and being finalized in Romania thus rise to one total value of 2 billion euros for this year, mostly financed by European funds from the Operational Program for Large Infrastructures (POIM).
The works will be carried out by Webuild, 72,7% stake and leader of the construction consortium, with Salcef (at 27,3%). For its implementation, it is estimated that they will be employed 1.300 people, direct and third parties, for a total of 1900 people expected on the two lots 3 and 4.

The works also include 12 bridges, one of which is 635 meters long, 4 overpasses and 6 stations

Commissioned by CFR, on behalf of the Romanian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, the contract involves the design and execution of the modernization works of about 55 kilometers line railway between Ronat and Arad Nou, of Western Romania. It is also planned to build a metal bridge over the river Mures, with a central span of 180 meters and a total length of 635 meters, a further 11 bridges and 4 road overpasses and six railway stations.
The Caransebes-Timişoara-Arad line as a whole will help increase the transit speed and rail traffic capacity between the cities of Bucharest and Timişoara. On the new line, passenger trains will in fact be able to reach 160 kilometers per hour, while freight will be able to travel up to 120 kilometers per hour.

In Romania, the first Carpathian highway and the 2 km long Braila bridge are also underway

Webuild is also currently engaged in the works of Lots 5 and 3 of the Sibiu-Pitesti motorway, the first highway that will cross the Carpathians, as well as the modernization of 120 kilometers of railway line between Frontieră, Curtici and Simeria, a project divided into three lots which also involves the construction of bridges and viaducts and the modernization of stations.
Also of note is the project for the construction of the Braila bridge: with a length of 1.975 meters and a central span of 1.120 metres, it will be the second longest suspension bridge in continental Europe.
