It has just been released in bookstores. We Are All Madame Bovary – And 50 Writers Explain Why” (Editors Guide), the new book by Gabriella Carmagnola. After the success of the noir novel Do not tell anybody (Guida Editori, 2022), the Turin author now offers a volume that explore the great novels of world literature, collecting its beating heart in a pocket-sized format.
"I great novels talk about us and talk now – explains Carmagnola. – They say that we all aspire to something we don’t have. We are always searching for happiness, just like Madame Bovary, the protagonist of Gustave Flaubert’s masterpiece. But the same goes for the characters in other great novels: through them we discover our fragilities, our ambitions, our fears.”
A Journey Through 50 Masterpieces of Literature
The book is a journey through 50 masterpieces of literature, from Proust to Kundera, from Calvino to Dostoevsky, from Yourcenar to Márquez, from Kafka to Ernaux. For every novel, Carmagnola reveals the main themes, the narrative environment and the emotional impact, integrating his commentary with direct quotes from the authors.
“These books,” the author continues, “transmit deep emotions and, once read, remain etched in the memory. Sometimes, they resurface in difficult moments, as if they were friends who help us understand life better.”
The preface introduces the meaning of the work, while a rfinal down payment closes the volume, making it not only a literary compendium, but also a self-contained narrative experience.
A unique work of its kind, which makes 50 masterpieces accessible without trivializing them, but inviting the reader to discover or rediscover them. Ideal for those who love literature and want to delve deeper into it, but also for those who are approaching these classics for the first time.
