Von der Leyen: "Elderly people at home maybe until December"

To avoid being infected with the coronavirus, seniors – that is, those most at risk – could be forced to stay at home "until the end of the year". The announcement comes from Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, in an interview published in the German newspaper BILD.

In the same speech, the number one of the Community Executive also advises "do not book summer holidays”, since the evolution of the crisis is unpredictable and at the moment we cannot be sure of what we will be able to or will not be able to do in 3-4 months.

“I know it's difficult, I know that isolation is a burden – underlines Von der Leyen – but it is a matter of life and death. We must be disciplined and remain patient. We must learn to live with the virus, because we will still have to do it for many monthsmaybe until next year.”

THE HOPE OF AN ANTI-COVID VACCINE BY 2020

From the columns of the BILD, the President of the EU Commission also launches a message of hope, stating that she hopes that it will be possible to create a vaccine for the coronavirus Covid-19 by the end of 2020. In particular, Von der Leyen speaks of two European teams that “plan to start clinical trials soon. Then there are steps for approval and full-scale production. I hope they develop a vaccine by the end of the year so that vaccinations can then be done quickly. We are already talking to several companies for global production”.

THE HUNGARIAN QUESTION

In the same interview, Von der Leyen also talks about theHungary, Where Viktor Orban established a de facto dictatorship. Budapest's number one can in fact govern by decree without consulting Parliament, abolish existing laws, postpone or cancel elections, and all this without any previously established time limit.

Under these conditions, says the number one of the Commission, Hungary "risk an infringement procedureEuropean Union, because the measures to combat the epidemic "must be proportionate, limited in time" and not subvert the rules of democracy.

Brussels observes all the countries of the Union, concludes Von der Leyen, "but we pay particular attention to Hungary because of past experiences".
