VOGUE PARIS 1920-2020, an exhibition to celebrate the anniversary

The Palais Galliera hosts an unprecedented exhibition until January 30, 2022 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Vogue Paris magazine

VOGUE PARIS 1920-2020, an exhibition to celebrate the anniversary

Founded by Condé Nast in 1920, Vogue Paris it is the oldest French fashion magazine still published today, and the only title of the group bearing the name of a city rather than a country.

As the capital of fashion, Paris is portrayed in Vogue as the epicenter of cultural and artistic life and the Parisienne as the embodiment of the Vogue woman. Mirror of its time and champion of creativity, Vogue Paris has always been a major player in fashion, reflecting or challenging notions of taste, beauty and elegance.

The exhibition illustrates the magazine's ability to create, adapt and anticipate over the past 100 years. Vogue Paris 1920-2020 traces the history of the magazine through the editors-chefs whose editorial and artistic choices have made it what it is: from Michel de Brunhoff, via Edmonde Charles-Roux, Francine Crescent and Carine Roitfeld, to Emmanuelle Alt . It is these exceptional personalities, their time working with the magazine and their commitment, that have given Vogue Paris its unique character and texture. The exhibition highlights the talent of the great illustrators, and in particular of the photographers, whom Vogue Paris has encouraged. Hoyningen-Huene, Horst, Bourdin, Klein, Newton, Watson, Lindbergh, Testino, Inez & Vinoodh, are among those who have produced their most beautiful spreads for Vogue Paris. In this chronological journey, a series of spotlights pays tribute to the magazine's faithful collaborators. The exhibition highlights Vogue Paris' special relationship with those great couturiers, that the magazine has supported throughout their careers, Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld.

The 1007 covers of Vogue Paris, installed in the form of a panorama, only tell the continuity of the magazine over a century. They show the moments of breaking the aesthetics and the transition from illustration to photography. On the back of each cover, “The Vogue's Viewpoint” is the only column to accompany the history of the magazine. These editorials bear witness to the evolution of the model, but also to the fashion discourse over time and the positioning of the magazine in society. Initially composed a few lines above the summary, they quickly give themselves the power to fill a full page. Texts and images are uniquely harmonized; each editorial is visually remarkable.

The Vogue woman is embodied in the Catherine Deneuve exhibition and Kate Moss, the two women who have posed for the biggest covers. About 1920 articles have been collected for Vogue Paris 2020-400, mainly from the magazine's archives – photographs, illustrations, magazines, documents and films – as well as more than fifteen haute couture and prêt-à-porter models.
