Vodafone accelerates, it will be 100% green in 2021

Vodafone 100% green. The mobile operator has announced that by July 2021 the European network will be powered by 100% renewable electricity, creating a network for customers in 11 markets that will develop sustainably using only wind, solar or hydro energy sources . The new objective is three years ahead of the previous target set at 2025. In reality, it is a question of taking the last step of a path that already today allows Vodafone to supply 97% of its food from renewable sources in Europe. In particular, in the last year, Vodafone Italia thanks to the use of Smart IoT devices (e.g. smart meter, smart logistics, cloud & hosting and so on) has registered a reduction of emissions equal to 1.306.815 tons CO2 eequivalent.

Proceeding with the green strategy, Vodafone also undertakes "to support business customers who use its services to reduce their carbon emissions by a combined total of 350 million tonnes globally in the decade 2020/2030 - an ambitious goal which equals the UK's total annual carbon emissions in 2019."1

Among the other sustainability objectives pursued by the group is that of "improving the lives of 1 billion people and at the same time halving their environmental impact by 2025".

“As society rebuilds and recovers from the COVID-19 crisis, we have an opportunity to reshape our future in a sustainable way, to ensure that recovery does not come at the expense of the environment. Accelerating our move to 100% renewable energy on European grids will forever change the way we power our technology – reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, helping our customers manage their resources more effectively and reduce their carbon emissions while helping to create a cleaner planet for all,” he said Nick Read, Vodafone Group CEO.

“About four-fifths of the energy used by the Vodafone networks, continues the note released by the group, will come from renewable sources obtained directly from the national electricity networks through electricity purchase contracts and with green tariffs. The remaining fifth, provided by Vodafone to its landlords for buildings and other infrastructure, will instead be covered by certificates for renewable energy".

Lastly, the group does not exclude direct investment in plants for the production of energy on site, especially photovoltaics. The new carbon reduction target has been determined, concludes Vodafone with the help of the international think-tank Carbon Trust which is entrusted with calculating the CO2 emissions avoided.
