Vivendi evaluates the acquisition of Sky

Vivendi is considering buying Sky. The Reuters agency writes it, quoting "sources close to the situation". The operation would be one of the viable ways for the French media giant to grow its television subsidiary Canal Plus.

Vivendi would focus on Sky after evaluating smaller targets in the pay-TV sector in Turkey and other fast-growing European markets.

According to Reuters, the position of will be crucial for the fate of the operation Vincent Bolloré, chairman and major shareholder of Vivendi, which recently raised its stake in the French conglomerate to 12% and which considers Canal Plus as part of the group's core business.

For the moment, no confirmations or denials have come from those directly involved.

Sky is worth today 17,6 billion pounds, equal to approximately 24,1 billion euros, but could cost Vivendi up to 28 billion pounds including debt. Satellite TV, which last year absorbed all of Sky Italia, is controlled with 39% by Rupert Murdoch's Twenty-First Century Fox.
