Visco: "I look forward to the ECB stress test on Italian banks"

“We look forward to the results of the stress test on Italian banks". To say it is the president of the Bank of Italy Ignazio Visco, commenting, on the occasion of a conference, the tests on bank balance sheets (124 in the whole EU) coordinated by the ECB and the EBA.

"Over the last few years - said Visco - the Italian banking system has, on the whole, given good proof of its ability to resist even large-scale adverse phenomena: the global financial crisis, tensions on sovereign debt, the double-dip recession" . The stress test, he continued, “represents the first step towards single European supervision; for the banks that will be supervised in a centralized form it constitutes an important test case”.

According to the president of the Bank of Italy “the evaluation follows objective methodologies to which we contribute with the European Central Bank and the other national supervisory authorities; the action taken in the last period on the evolution of credit and its quality has made it possible to strengthen Italian banks, reassuring the markets on the overall solidity of their balance sheets”.
