Christie's Online Auction Opens: Watches Online: Discovering Time (October 1-13), a selection of more than 160 unusual and fine timepieces sure to delight passionate collectors with a variety of focuses and interests.
Leading the sale is a Rolex Oyster Cosmograph Daytona ref. 6265, owned and worn by auto racing legend Carroll Smith ($150.000-200.000). Carroll Smith had a legendary career in racing where he held the titles of driver, engineer, manager and writer. He is best known for working with Carroll Shelby and the Ford Motor Company on the GT40 Le Mans project; the thrilling race that inspired the recent movie Ford vs. Ferrari. His responsibilities on the project included overseeing the preparation of the winning cars at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in both 1966 and 1967. Rolex Cosmograph was given to Smith by the Cuddy Racing team for the 5000 SCCA L&M F1973 Championship Series. The team was leading the infamous Bill Cuddy, known for his racing and run-ins with the law. Accompanying the watch are two books by Carroll Smith, “Prepare to Win”, 1975 and “Drive to Win”, 1996.
