Wine, more transparency on labels

A circular from the Ministry of Agricultural Policies makes it compulsory to indicate the region of origin on the bottles.

Wine, more transparency on labels

With the circular of the Ministry of Agricultural Policies of 31 December 2014, it became mandatory to indicate on wine labels the broader geographical name that specifies the Region or Province of production of a given IGP or DOP wine (i.e. DOC and DOCG wines).

The provision complies with Community legislation, specifically EU Reg. 1308/2013, which dictates the principles on the protection of products with PDO and PGI brands, specifying that the indication of the wider geographical name is permitted for PDO and PGI wines . The novelty also concerns the tools of modern technology, such as food e-commerce websites or interactive brochures illustrating the production areas.

"An important news for consumers - comment Ivano Giacomelli and Matteo Pennacchia, national secretary and agri-food manager of the Codici consumer association - who, by choosing to buy a wine with a protected geographical indication or denomination, obtain more information regarding the traceability of the product choice. The consumer finally manages to identify the cultural value of a territory that produces excellent Italian wines, also through the broader descriptions in the marketing on electronic commerce platforms ".
