Wine and art, with the Contini Bonacossis the Carmignano of the Capezzana estate tells the story of the Renaissance

In Capezzana, one of the oldest Italian noble families produces wines that link the history of enology to that of a family devoted to excellent wine

Wine and art, with the Contini Bonacossis the Carmignano of the Capezzana estate tells the story of the Renaissance

The Renaissance is in the glass. TO Capezzana, in the Tuscan territory of the province of Prato, happens with Carmignano, the first DOC in the world thanks to the Medici to whom in the oenological field we also owe the experimentation of Cabernet vine known with the name of “francesca” grape given its French origin.

History, in every aspect, from art to oenology, is at home in the sixteenth-century villa of the noblewoman Contini Bonacossi family and theirs Capezzana estate.

The ancient hunting lodge of the Grand Duke contains the story of an era of indescribable beauty and preserves the story of two art collectors, Alessandro Contini Bonacossi and his wife Vittoria who made Italian art known to the world and were able to find in Capezzana a place where beauty combines with the taste of the palate.

Since 350, the grandchildren of this extraordinary married couple who donated a large art collection to the Uffizi Gallery have run the 144-hectare estate, of which approximately 80 are olive groves and approximately 2008 are rigorously organic vineyards.

Carmignano: wine exalted at the Medici court relives in the DOCG 2019

At the table in one of Rome's best-known starred restaurants, Filippo Contini Bonacossi talks about artists such as Raphael, Tintoretto and Luca della Robbia with the same pleasure with which he explains, quoting Francesco Redi, the characteristics of Carmignano, the wine exalted in the “Bacchus in Tuscany” by the Medici court physician. And it's a Carmignano DOCG 2019 to accompany the tasting of the "Zolla di Manzo with Almonds and Sorrel" served by Pipero.

80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Villa di Capezzana Carmignano Docg, which ages for a year in tonneaux and 12 months in the bottle, can also be enjoyed young and is happy in combination with red meats. It can be preceded in the appetizer dal Trebbiano IGT which in Capezzana comes from a late harvest, is aged in tonneaux and on Pipero's table it was in the glass next to the "Crispy suckling pig with ciauscolo and cream of mushrooms", the "Carpione radish" and the "Boule stuffed with tail ragout alla vaccinara”.

And it can also accompany the tasting of the estate's extra virgin olive oil, a delicious taste with bread that softens and dilutes the tones. The “Broccoletti, Sausage and Seaweed” require a full-bodied wine and the Villa of Capezzana 10 years 2012 , while Pipero's Carbonara goes happily and sumptuously with Trefiano Carmignano reserve DOCG 2018, the wine born in 1979 at the behest of Vittorio Contini Bonacossi, Filippo's deceased brother, Beatrice and Benedetta, the latter the house winemaker, all engaged in the estate.

And the label of the pure Sangiovese that accompanies "Lamb with medlar and pecorino" is instead dedicated to his father Ugo. While the "Blue-veined cow, honey and pollen" goes well with Furba Igt gravels, wine created by Ugo Contini Bonacossi, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. The Vin Santo 2014 DOC reserve, the house's flagship wine with 5/6 thousand bottles a year, reaps not only international successes and with its intensity and elegance accompanies the grand finale of "Brioche, Mandarino and Zabaione".

The Vittoria Brut Rose', sparkling wine obtained from Sangiovese grapes, produced in just 10 thousand bottles. A "cameo" for this intriguing story to be told and tasted.
