Wine: the new generation arrives at the Badia di Morrona

The Pisan company celebrates its 80th anniversary with two important vertical events and the entry into the field of the three offspring destined to take over the reins of the winery.

Not only wine, but also art, history, uncontaminated nature and… an elegant and young Genoese accent. The Badia di Morrona, with its ancient convent and its frescoed rooms as a backdrop for statues, capitals and precious furnishings, stands out among woods and vineyards a stone's throw from Pisa and a few kilometers from Florence and Siena. A living structure, where it is still there Gaslini Alberti family, when he leaves Genoa, he spends his vacation time and around which there are farmhouses once inhabited by farmers who today host tourists from all over the world ready to taste the Sangiovese and the SuperTuscans of the Badia.

The Gaslini Alberti of this corner of Tuscany, in the municipality of Terricciola, are descendants of Gerolamo Gaslini from which the name of the hospital founded by him in the Ligurian capital and by his brother Egidio, the latter adopted by thelast representative of the Genoese branch of Leon Battista Alberti hence the double surname that the family bears today.

To tell the story over a glass of Vigna Alta, the DOC that best represents the Badia è Philip Gaslini Alberti who has held the reins of the company for a quarter of a century, part of which together with his father Egidio who died ten years ago.

But the real protagonists of history today are Niccolò, Filippo's son, with his cousins Francesca and Lorenzo, sons of Filippo's sister, Alessandra, all three young university students taking their first steps to fully enter the company in the future.

Two vertical ones, from Vigna Alta (100% Sangiovese) and N'Antia (Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot), the top wines of the Badia, celebrate the 80 years of ownership, but they are also the occasion for the “society debut” of the three young offspring under the watchful eye of their parents, uncles and grandmother. Not a worldly occasion but a real job. between expert oenologists and representatives of the world of press and communication. Eight vintages of Vigna Alta, 1997-1998-1999-2000-2011-2013-2015-2016, the 100% Sangiovese that the company has been producing since 1994, a Terre di Pisa DOC.

Intense and elegant on the nose, with sweet spices and dominant red fruit and hints of cherries and black cherries, Vigna Alta is a structured and balanced wine, it has an important body that enhances the typical tannic texture of Sangiovese. Another vertical tasting at the Badia is that of N'Antia, a Bordeaux blend, the composition of which has been modified over time and has left Sangiovese behind to make way for Cabernet Franc. Eight vintages submitted to the refined palates of the Badia stalls: 1997-1998-1999-2005-2010-2013-2015-2016. The company has 110 hectares of vineyards planted following the best techniques to obtain quality wines from every point of view. Added to this are the cultivation of olive trees and the hospitality business and last but not least the Poderi dei Bricchi Astigiani in Piedmont, a company with 15 hectares of land, small if compared to the Badia but capable of giving one of the most precious Barbera in the area .

”Today – says Filippo Gaslini Alberti – I am trying to pass on to my son Niccolò and my grandchildren Francesca and Lorenzo the love for this property and for the land and nature in general, in the awareness of the great commitment that today is required to continue the growth path of the company”.

The “small” but future great winemakers – Niccolò, Francesca, Lorenzo (in the photo from the right Niccolò, Francesca and Lorenzo) – taste the family wines with sobriety, they converse amiably even if perhaps they talk about their football teams and the Genoa stadium more willingly than clones and malolactic ones. But they don't let him glimpse it out of good manners.
