Winemakers and chefs: women are conquering Italian food and wine

The Italian wine market is increasingly tinged with pink. According to the Cribris report, the number of female wineries has now exceeded 25% of the Italian primary sector producing, together with female agricultural entrepreneurs, 28% of agricultural GDP.

Women are also conquering the restaurant industry, a sector that until recently was mainly occupied by men but which in recent years has seen female chefs emerge even in starred restaurants. According to the 2019 Michelin Guide, around 4% are female chefs in the world out of over 3 restaurants in 28 countries: in Italy, out of 367 starred, there are 45 women, while in France, out of 621, just 16.

Thus the Italian wine producers and entrepreneurs with passion, competence and innovation are revolutionizing the entire sector even in such a delicate moment as the one we are experiencing. An example is the initiative “Wine unites us”, promoted by Delegations of the Women of Wine of Lazio and Sicily. A streaming appointment to tell and enhance the uniqueness of the wines of Lazio and Sicily and their territories, but also to invite enthusiasts to reconnect with the world of wine.

A rich and varied calendar that will continue on a weekly basis starting from from April 22 until May, (every Thursday at 19:00) to then resume in September, after a short summer break.

From volcanic wines to those of the sea, from rosés to bubbles, from amphorae to barrels, to the similarities and similarities between the native vines of the two regions to sweet wines. With cross pairings between wine and dishes from the respective regions, such as supplì or arancinipasta incasciata or amatriciana, chefs and representatives of associations and the local area will also be involved to give an extra cue to the topics that will be covered. And, among the curiosities, also an episode with guests from beyond the Alps.

Coordinated by the journalist Francesca Landolina, the Sicilian producer Giusy Calcagno of Calcagno wines on Etna and the Lazio producer Giulia Fusco of Merumalia, a company on the slopes of the Frascata hills, will be present. Following the calendar:

  • Thursday April 22th – Volcanic wines leads Francesca Landolina
  • Thursday April 29th – Lazio and Sicily in rosé leads Floriana Risuglia
  • Thursday May 6th – Lazio and Sicily from bubble to bubble leads Maria Antonietta Pioppo
  • Thursday May 13th – Lazio and Sicily between food and wine leads Chiara Giannotti
  • Thursday May 20th – Lazio and Sicily in Brussels hosts Alma Torretta
  • Thursday May 27th – Noble vines of Lazio and Sicily leads Sabrina de Feudis

“An intriguing initiative – he explained Donatella Cinelli Colombini, national president of Women of Wine – the strength of this alliance between Lazio and Sicily lies precisely in the uniqueness of the territories and wines and represents an opportunity for enhancement and promotion to invite enthusiasts to return to live the experience of wine, live. And it is also a way to reaffirm our presence in this difficult moment for our sector, because we have never stopped. And initiatives like these and many others that we are carrying out in all the delegations, such as training webinars, allow us to plan for today".
