Via the IMU, but not for everyone: maxi-deductibles up to 600 euros or floor area are being studied

The first option plans to exempt those who pay up to 600 euros from the tax, or about 80% of Italian taxpayers, while the second aims to hit only houses with an area of more than 100-120 square meters - Rumors denied who spoke of a possible sting on the villas - The Pdl attacks Saccomanni.

Via the IMU, but not for everyone: maxi-deductibles up to 600 euros or floor area are being studied

Maxi-deductible or square footage. These are the two criteria that remain in the field to revolutionize the Imu, the number one objective of the Italian political summer. The first option is to exempt from tax those who pay up to 600 euros, or about 80% of Italian tax payers. In this way, the sting would only come to homeowners with very high cadastral income, which alone currently guarantee about half of the revenue. The second hypothesis provides instead of affect only houses with an extension of more than 100-120 square meters, classified in cadastral class A2.

It also seems that the idea of remains on the table merging the Imu with Tares (the new waste tax) and taxes on other municipal services. If in the end this hypothesis were to prevail, the tax base would result from a mix between the square footage of the house and the number of family members, following the example of what already happens for the waste tax.

The government and the majority will meet again on Wednesday 18 July to take stock of the discussion. Meanwhile, yesterday afternoon Palazzo Chigi has denied the rumors press according to which the Government would have thought of charging the tax only on luxury properties, terraced houses and semi-detached houses. "Contrary to what was reported by some newspapers - the Executive wrote - no sting is foreseen on the villas".

For its part, the Ministry of the Economy writes that it is "studying a plurality of solutions on which the Government will decide collectively after having discussed them in the discussion forums that have already been identified". In any case, the rumors spread by the press "do not reflect the positions of the government and the minister". In recent days, the Treasury had guaranteed that it would take into account the reliefs arrived from the IMF, who had advised Italy not to abolish the Imu.

The solution is by no means obvious, above all because the tax on housing is the subject of daily clashes between the two souls of the majority and the Government: the PDL would like the total abolition of the Imu, while the Pd aims to remodel it to meet the most disadvantaged social groups.

The tones of the controversy have become particularly heated in the last few hours, to the point that the centre-right explicitly attacked the economy minister, Fabrizio Saccomanni. "There is a gray area of the Treasury - said Fabrizio Cicchitto - which bypasses the Government and ministers to connect directly with environments of the European Union and the IMF, to invite them to restrictive interventions". Furthermore, for Maurizio Gasparri, with Saccomanni the Executive "is not going anywhere: we need a true and authoritative minister".

Dario Franceschini, Minister for Relations with Parliament, replied to these words in an interview with “La Stampa”, arguing that “Saccomanni is crucial for Italy's European and international credibility. So far he has done well: he is responsible and competent. And his choices involve the entire government, they are never the result of individual decisions. Attacking him is like attacking the entire government."
