“Vestiarium” a book by Francesco Pertegato

The robes of distinction of ancient Rome – the cassockdalmaticplanet and, perhaps, the chlamys – are at the origin of those still worn in the liturgy of the Catholic Church. Over time, other brands have also joined (stolehandpiecepallium, crozier, miter and tiara). The attribution to the various degrees of the ecclesiastical order and the modalities of their use reflect the process of theological elaboration and the consolidation of a hierarchy headed by the bishop, assisted by the deacon. All this also affects the architecture of places of worship, the images and the liturgical celebration, in which songs and actions of sacred drama are inserted, the nascent seed of theater in Europe.

A volume that underlines the cultural and political context that accompanies the journey, from the first centuries up to the fourteenth, when the shape and decoration of the garments and where the symbology becomes the mystical thought and together they reach completion, the unification of the Church and the full affirmation of papal primacy.

In the final chapters, there is also a first European repertoire relating to tunics, dalmatics, chasubles and copes.

Francesco Pertegato coordinated for over a quarter of a century the activity of the Textile Artifact Restoration Center (Milan/Ferrara). From the interventions carried out on some garments of particular rarity, in Italy and in Egypt, the interest in the study that leads to this volume arose. Among the many publications of the author are mentioned: The textiles. degradation and restoration (1993, 2004) and The restoration of the tapestries (1996), for the types of Nardini Editore; Argenta western outpost of the Church of Ravenna. Historical-iconographic reading of the parish church of S. Giorgio (2016), for Longo Editore.
