The Foreign Minister, Federica Mogherini, is the new High Representative for Foreign Policy of the European Union, the new Lady Pesc. This was decided by the summit of heads of state and government in Brussels, rewarding the insistence and tenacity with which Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has launched and supported Mogherini's candidacy in recent months, even when the new president of the EU Commission, Jean- Claude Juncker had openly invited him to change candidate because some Eastern countries considered him too conciliatory with Putin's Russia. In the end, Italy prevailed, receiving everyone's approval and the immediate appreciation of the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano, who underlined how our Foreign Minister is much appreciated in Europe and her appointment represents "an important recognition " for Italy.
The Polish premier Donald Tusk instead went to the presidency of the European Council, an appointment which then facilitated the promotion of Mogherini who will also be one of the four vice-presidents of the EU Commission and therefore will be able to see all the main Commission dossiers.
“I will devote all my energies – Mogherini immediately declared – in the interest of all the Member States and all European citizens”. Ukraine will be its first problem to be tackled with energy, especially after the appeal of the Ukrainian president who asked Europe to give adequate responses to the seriousness of Russia's trespassing and threats to Kiev.
Together with the nominations, which will be completed on 8 and 9 September, the European summit dealt with the Ukrainian emergency but also with economic growth: on this subject, Italy will host an international conference on 7 October on a proposal from French President Hollande to decide how Europe, while respecting the rules, can step on the accelerator pedal for recovery and employment, also in the light of the 300 billion investment plan launched by Juncker.
