Venice, new alarm: 70% of the historic center flooded

Venice is under water again. The truce lasted only 24 hours, but this morning, November 15, the city is once again prey to bad weather and tides.

According to the City Weather Office, at 11.35 a peak of water of 154 centimeters was reached. The limit has been recorded at Punta della Salute, but the water is slowly starting to go down. In Burano the tide reached 149 centimeters, in Chioggia 146. However, the Municipality warns citizens about alleged forecasts of "tidal peaks without foundation".

Great difficulties in the historic center, the central area of ​​the city is 70 percent flooded. 

The new alert has forced the Municipality to stop the circulation of water buses throughout Venice, all public transport is blocked and schools have remained closed. Piazza San Marco is also closed due to the mayor Luigi Brugnaro's order. 

"It's 9.20 - says Brugnaro in a video posted on his Twitter profile - and I'm now forced to close the square just in case, so as not to endanger people's safety". Shortly before, in another post Brugnaro wrote: “Another day of alert for Venice. The sirocco wind continues to blow. I invite you to avoid traveling and keep yourself updated on the water level with the @ICPSMVenezia”.

Hotels boarded up with tourists locked inside, while shopkeepers try how they can to limit the damage caused by high water.

The day after the Government's decision to allocate the first 20 million for Venice, the minister for relations with Parliament, Federico D'Incà, announced that he had appointed Brugnaro emergency commissioner. 

“Mayor Luigi Brugnaro has been appointed emergency commissioner and I made an inspection in Venice with him. The situation is complex but the state is there and the government is ready to do whatever is necessary to protect this precious stone”. So in a tweet the Minister for Relations with Parliament Federico D'Incà.

The Minister of Cultural Heritage is present in Venice, Dario Franceschini.

In the meantime, the Civil Protection has issued another bulletin relating to adverse weather conditions. Red alert on some territories of the Veneto for today, but the bad weather coming from the Atlantic will bring rain, snow and stormy winds on all the Northern and Central regions. Orange alert on the autonomous province of Bolzano, on part of Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto and on Liguria and Tuscany.
