Venice, entrance fee at the start: 5 euros to enter the city. Here's how it works, who pays and on which days

The trial on the entry fee starts on January 16th. During the 29 "red days" anyone who enters the city without staying overnight will have to pay: fines of up to 300 euros

Go to Venice for a day? It will cost 5 euros. It comes into force on access fee to the city strongly desired by the Municipality of Venice. The experiment will officially start on January 16th with the opening of the portal where those who want to visit the city without staying overnight during the 29 days considered to be of high tourist flow will have to make the payment. 

Venice: the access fee starts, here's how it works

Day tourists not staying in Venice will have to pay an access fee of 5 euros. For this first experimental phase, the sum must be paid only in 29 “red days” of high tourist flow identified in the municipality, the first of which is scheduled for April 25th. Payment must be made through the portal created ad hoc. Once logged in and paid the fee, tourists will receive a QR Code to show in case of checks. The title will certify both the payment made and the exclusion/exemption condition. 

According to the provisions, the contribution will be applied only to the ancient city and not to the smaller islands including the Lido of Venice (including Alberoni and Malamocco), Pellestrina, Murano, Burano, Torcello, Sant'Erasmo, Mazzorbo, Mazzorbetto, Vignole, S. Andrea, the Certosa, San Servolo, S. Clemente, Poveglia. Even tourists who pass through Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto or the Maritime Station without accessing the ancient city do not have to pay the fee.

Venice: the 29 days in which the access fee will have to be paid in 2024 

With the resolution of 23 November 2023 the municipality established the days of 2024 when you will have to pay the access fee. In total there are 29 days: 

  • from April 25th to May 5th;
  • on Saturdays and Sundays in May (11th and 12th, 18th and 19th, 25th and 26th), 
  • on Saturdays and Sundays in June (8th and 9th, 15th and 16th, 22nd and 23rd, 29th and 30th) 
  • on Saturdays and Sundays in July (6 and 7, 13 and 14). 

The contribution is due for those who enter the ancient city from hour to hour 8.30 16.00.

Venice who has to pay, who is excluded, who is exempt

They will have to pay the entrance fee to Venice i daily visitors over the age of 14 who access the ancient city without staying in the municipality.

“I am instead excluded from payment, in addition to residents, also workers (employed or self-employed), including commuters, students of any level and level of schools and universities located in the ancient city or in the smaller islands, individuals and members of the families of those who appear to have paid the IMU in the Municipality of Venice.

Also expected exemptions. In detail, the following are exempt from payment:

  • all those who stay in accommodation facilities in Venice, 
  • residents in the Veneto Region,
  • children up to 14 years of age, 
  • those in need of care, those who participate in sports competitions, law enforcement officers on duty,
  • the spouse, partner, relatives or in-laws up to the 3rd degree of residents in the areas where the access fee is valid.

But be careful: all those who are exempt will still have to have a QR Code to be shown in case of checks.

Venice, access fee: fines of up to 300 euros for those who do not pay

Tourists who, within the 29 days identified by the municipality, do not pay the access fee will be subject to an administrative fine from 50 euro to 300 euro (+10 euros of the access fee).
