Veneto Banca: new earthquake, Anselmi has resigned

There are three reasons for the president's farewell: the disagreement with the Atlante fund over the timing of the merger with Popolare di Vicenza which could have dramatic employment implications; the difference of views on the same merger with Popolare di Vicenza and above all with the president of the latter Gianni Mion; differences also with the CEO of Veneto Banca, Francesco Iorio

Veneto Banca: new earthquake, Anselmi has resigned

Just three months after his appointment, Beniamino Anselmi has resigned. The president of Veneto Banca who had been given the task of helping to restore the accounts of the Montebelluna institute currently controlled, together with Popolare di Vicenza, by the Atlante fund, decided to take a step back due to a difference of views relating to the methods and timing of the merger between the two Venetian institutes and disagreements with their top management. But not only.

In a letter to the board of directors, Anselmi communicated his intention to leave the presidency, remaining in any case on the board of directors of Veneto Banca. The reason is soon said: iThe manager does not agree with the implementation of a "too fast" merger with Popolare di Vicenza. An operation considered "forced" and supported by the Atlante fund at the instigation of the supervisory authority which could have very serious repercussions from the employment point of view of the Veneto banks, whose situation however does not allow for delays.

The news was commented by the trade unions, according to which "the news of the resignation of the president of Veneto Banca, Beniamino Anselmi, casts a sinister light on the future of the workers of the two Popolari in the Veneto region for whom a forced merger is threatened which would cost a large number of jobs”, stated Giulio Romani, First Cisl secretary.

Also pushing Anselmi towards abandonment would be the various positions taken over the past few months by the number one of Veneto Banca and by the correspondent of BpVi Gianni Mion, also nominated by Atlante and in favor of a rapid union between the two Venetian banking realities. Internal disagreements with the managing director of the Montebelluna institute, Francesco Iorio, also made the situation worse.

After the opening statements made at the end of the summit held on 28 October last, the problems seemed to have subsided and instead today we are at the breaking point, so much so that the president's letter of resignation was not a bolt from the blue. And next week Veneto Banca goes to a meeting to vote on the liability action against the former top management of the Trinca-Consoli-Antiga era.
