After an August to forget and nine months of sharp decline, car sales in the EU start to rise again in September - FCA beats the market - Positive sector on the stock market

Auto sales up in September: FCA doing well, the title is running

A breath of fresh air after months of apnea for the European car market. According to the latest data published by Acea, in September the registrations of new cars in Europe (EU plus EFTA plus Great Britain) increased by 1,1% to 1.300.048 units after the -17,6% recorded in August. The downward trend seems to have finally reversed, despite the fact that the balance for the nine months of 2020 remains strongly negative (-29,3%).

EU SALES

The data concerning the European Union alone was also positive, where registrations rose in September by 3,1% to 933.987 units against the -28,8% recorded in the nine months of the current year. Italy (+9,5%) and Germany (+8,4%) mainly rebounded, while Spain (-13,5%) and France (-3%) remain in the ford.

“The growth is certainly modest, but it is significant because it could represent the beginning of the trend reversal after the disastrous impact of the coronavirus affair on sales in the first eight months of the year". This is the comment of the Centro Studi Promotor, which underlines that "the trend reversal, if this is the case, is essentially due to the incentives launched in many markets which have favored above all the sales of electric and plug-in hybrid cars".

FCA SALES

Speaking of the individual brands, FCA has traveled at a faster pace than the market, driven by the growth of Jeep, Lancia and Fiat. Altogether 77.800 cars sold by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles in September (+11,8%). The market share is also growing strongly, reaching 6% compared to 5,4% last year.

In Italy, the Agnelli family company increased volumes by 17,5%. The data in Germany (+23,5%) and Spain (+5,7%) are also positive.

Speaking of individual brands, Jeep registered almost 14.800 cars (+24,7%), Lancia just under 4.700 cars (+12,4%), Fiat almost 53.900 cars (+10%). Alfa Romeo substantially stable, with over 4.100 registrations and a share of 0,3%.

With reference to the models, segment A is the one that has lost the most due to the pandemic (sales down by 42,2% in the first nine months compared to the -29,6% average for all segments) but despite this, the Fiat 500 and Panda are confirmed as the best sellers in the category with, respectively, 18.400 registrations (+5,4%) and 17.400 registrations (+36,6%). The Lancia Ypsilon did well in segment B, which increased its sales volumes by 12,8%, and the Alfa Romeo Giulia in segment D, with +10,9%. The Jeep Renegade (+24,3%), Wrangler (+25,6%) and Compass (+38,4%) and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio (+4,9%) also grew.

THE REACTION OF THE STOCK MARKET

The positive data for September boosted stock market purchases of the Agnelli galaxy stock. The best is fca, up 2,36% to 10,588 euros. Up too Ferrari (+ 2,34%), Exor (+ 1,43%) and Cnh (+1,1%). Positive actions Volkswagen (+ 1,66%) and bmw (+1,3%) in Frankfurt, they run Peugeot (+ 3,43%) and Renault (+4,58%) in Paris.
