The former European Central Bank president has been nominated by Pope Francis along with two other university professors to join the Vatican think tank

Vatican: Pope appoints Draghi to the Pontifical Academy

Mario Draghi, former president of the European Central Bank and former Governor of the Bank of Italy joins the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. The news comes from the press office of the Holy See which also underlines that the appointment was made directly by Pope Francis. 

The Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences was established in 1994 by Pope John Paul II with the aim of promote the study and progress of the economy, politics and society, to provide the Church with the elements to be used for the development of social doctrine and to allow for the study of the effects of its application in contemporary society.

The body is chaired by Stefano Zamagni, economist, while the Argentine bishop, Sanchez Sorondo holds the role of chancellor.

That of Draghi, who in his youth studied at Massimo, the prestigious Roman high school run by the Jesuits, was not the only appointment made today, July 10, by Pope Francis. Together with him two university professors joined the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences as ordinary members: Pedro Morandé Court, professor emeritus of sociology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and professor Adetokunbo Agbontaen Eghafona, Professor of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Benin.
